Whether he's deep in the mix behind a pair of 1200s or in his recording studio crafting wondrous deep house compositions, Chicago's DJ Pope is always in an uplifting state of mind. On "Spirit," his captivating single for Cutting Records, Pope uses his growing musical prowess to wonderfully compliment Marty St. Michaels' compelling vocals, resulting in one of this year's most inspiring club songs.
A DJ since 1979, DJ Pope's mixing odyssey began when he started listening to his cousin Farley Funkin' Keith (a notable mixer on WBMX back in the day) spin on the radio. From there, he soaked up influence for several legendary house musical stalwarts, such as Frankie Knuckles and Tony Humphries. An admirer of club icons like Masters At Work, who are always trying to elevate dance music to a new realm. Pope is already known globally as the force behind various underground classics like N.C.O.P. Project's "What's It All About," as well as a variety of tracks released on Emotive, Micmac, Cajual, Shelter, Strictly Rhythm, Ministry Of Sound and his own Poji imprint, which he helms with his partner, DJ Oji.
"Spirit" follows in the same sublime path, even taking on more meaning as Pope's brother Darryl wrote the song's encouraging lyrics, making this a true family affair. "I think that this is a song that people really need to listen to very closely because we're sending a definite message here," says Pope. "I myself love lryics and songs that really say something, and when I'm in the booth I spin mostly vocal records. I think that "Spirit" is a very inspiring, positive piece of music, and it definitely gives people something to think about when they're dancing."
